Geneseo Illinois Post Office

January 28, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

ADDRESS: 120 W. 1st St., Geneseo, Illinois 61254

The weather forecast for the next two days calls for sunshine and temps in the 50’s. Seems like a perfect time to take a road trip and visit some post offices. Geneseo was the first post office I visited on this trip. I was really happy when I first spotted the building, as it is a classic older style building. I was also intrigued to find a survey marking on the building. This is the first building where I have noticed any survey markers associated with the post office. See Pictures below.

No dedication plaque however, there was a corner-stone stamped with the following. A. W.. Mellon secretary of treasury James A. Wetmore acting supervising architect. The date on the building is 1925.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Galena Illinois Post Office

ADDRESS: 110 Green St., Galena, Illinois 61036

Today our adventure brought us to Historic Galena, IL. I knew the town was historical in nature from what I had read prior to driving out here. I was really delighted when I first set eyes on this post office. It’s a really cool older building. The front of the building had a plaque designating it a “Historic Custom House” by the United States Customs Service.

Even the Smithsonian Institution has a plaque on the building designating it “A Great American Post Office” July 30, 1999. For all of those asking why this blog. Why I visit and take pictures of post offices this one represents every reason. It’s a great building, and its a great historical treasure.

Although, I was disappointed that the lobby is closed on Sunday and I was not able to get any pictures inside the building, I still enjoyed my visit to this post office. This is one for the record books and I know I’ll be back from more.

Elvaston Illinois Post Office

January 26, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

ADDRESS: 104 W. Main St., Elvaston, Illinois 62334

Taking pictures of post offices is not always an easy thing. While I was in Elvanston, IL the battery in my camera died. I had an extra one so I changed it out and continued to set up my tripod so I could take a self-portrait portrait. (The picture you see in this post)

Well, needless to say apparently the pictures I took prior to the battery dying did not save and the only photo I have is the self-portrait of me in front of the Elvanston post office.

Just for the record, I like to get a clean photo of the exterior of the building at each post office I visit. I wish I would have checked before I left.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
