Miami (Flagler) Florida Post Office

December 21, 2011 By David W. Gates Jr.

Flagler Station FL Post Office
Flagler Station FL Post Office 33101

ADDRESS: 500 NW 2 Ave., Miami, Florida 33101-9998

I found this one as we were walking around Miami. The Flagler PO is a substation branch in Miami. There is a great cement post at the front of the building. I found it interesting that this post office is named in honor of M. Athalie Range. June 11, 1998. The post office was dedicated in 1978 by Jimmy Carter. William F. Bolger, postmaster general.

Thanks for Reading

Miami Beach Florida Post Office

December 20, 2011 By David W. Gates Jr.

Miami Beach Post Office
Miami Beach Florida Post Office

ADDRESS: 1300 Washington Ave., Miami Beach, Florida 33119-9998
ARTIST: Charles Russell Hardman
TITLE: Episodes from the History of Florida
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas(mural)
STATUS: The Miami Beach post office is still an active, operating facility and the murals can be viewed by interested members of the public. They resides in the lobby rotunda.
YEAR: 1940

As I was walking down Washington Ave, this one came into view. I was immediately like wow! Check out how cool this one is. The architecture and shape were the first things I noticed. The uniqueness of this building was a treat to see.

I visited the Miami Beach Post office while I was visiting in November of 2011. As we were looking for things to do, you guessed it. I suggested we find the post office and that’s exactly what we ended up doing.

The post office boxes were also interesting as they look to be the original brass boxes from the time the building was constructed. I also noticed a wooden bulletin board that appears to be a period piece. I’m really glad I stopped in to take a look at this wonderful building known as the Miami Beach Post office.

I was not able to find a dedicated plaque for this one. I’m guessing this may be old enough that plaques were not issued at the time. Something more to investigate.

Thank You,

David W. Gates Jr.

Harvey Illinois Post Office

December 19, 2011 By David W. Gates Jr.

South Holland IL Post Office 60473
Harvey Illinois Post Office 60426

ADDRESS: 15441 Center Ave., Harvey, Illinois 60426

Of the six that I visited today the Harvey was my favorite. The building is old and historic. The lobby was open where I found great big paintings on the walls. There was even a Christmas tree in the lobby, making this one very festive for this time of year.

Although I did not find a dedication plaque, there was imprinting at the corner of the building indicating Mills as the Secretary of the Treasury, and Etmore as the acting architect. The date 1932 was also imprinted on the building corner stone.

David W. Gates Jr.
